Job to be done
When materials, receipts and labor for trade jobs are scattered and invoices get delayed, the contractor needs to link costs to each job and invoice it promptly, so they can know real profit without needing an office person.
How often the job comes up
What the pain costs them
Each post's frequency and money signal were read from its text by Claude Haiku 5.5. Cadence is the most common stated frequency. Criticality: Critical when at least half the posts report losing money or already paying a person or tool, High at 30%, Medium when any post pays or would pay, otherwise Low. The job sentence is model-written from the posts and has no numbers.
Why now
- Trayd raised a $10M Series A in 2026-03 for payroll and cost visibility for specialty trade contractors, which suggests investors are funding this buyer segment.
- The 'job costing software' search carries a CPC of $80.15 (search data), which indicates advertisers pay heavily for this intent right now.
- Upwork shows 49 of 50 recent matching jobs, including QuickBooks Online job costing setup and construction invoicing, so owners are currently paying people to patch the gap.

What paying customers dislike about Procore
he ergonomics are completely designed for heavy civil engineering and commercial construction, rendering the terminology incomprehensible for our specific needs. I spent endless hours in training sessions just to understand how to execute s
Navigating the site is not as easy of a task as others. Sometimes I would receive errors when attempting uploads.
Financial management is convoluted and requires too many steps. If a user has to edit an older change order for some reason, all subsequent change order statuses need to be edited which is a big waste of productive time.
So many things wrong with Procore! It makes me change my password too often - every 3 months! Why? Is someone going to steal my password and log on to do my work for me? It's not a financial site and it does not need a new password!
Procore was not very customizable and quite restrictive when it come to form building. We did find ways around this to make it work but would've been easier with more customization.
Procure has a lot of functions that one must learn. The train classes that procure provides are definitely not enough. It take quite a long time to figure it out.
Tools buyers already pay for
Posts naming each tool
Matching Upwork jobs naming it
A post counts once per tool when the tool's name appears in its title or body, or in the tool list Claude Haiku extracted from that post. Case-insensitive substring match, no model judgement in the counts.
Paid demand vs manual supply

Seller reviews cover all of a seller's gigs, so they show the market is real, not this exact service's volume.

Should you build this?
Reasons to build
- 7 of 14 Reddit posts carry money signals, including a crew that pays for a tool and a poster who would pay for centralized estimating and job costing.
- 11 of the 14 Reddit posts are recurring problems, not one-off complaints.
- Procore low-star reviews repeatedly cite price ('The pricing was way to high', 'Not worth what you pay') and terminology built for heavy civil and commercial work, leaving small trades underserved.
- A Reddit post says small GCs and subs use a hodgepodge of Excel docs because Procore is too expensive.
- The vendor-portal post (three portal logins per job, CSV downloads pasted into per-job Excel P&Ls) describes a concrete, automatable workflow.
- Upwork demand for QuickBooks job costing setup and construction bookkeepers shows the workaround is paid human labor.
Reasons not to
- Search volume is small: 390 US/month for 'job costing software', 260 for 'construction job costing', and 10 for 'contractor expense tracking'.
- Reddit engagement is thin at 34 upvotes across 14 posts.
- Several posts show the owner or boss prefers spreadsheets, and one crew abandoned QuickBooks after six months, so adoption and retention risk is high.
- Trayd, with $10M Series A funding, targets cost visibility for specialty trade contractors and may move into this space.
- QuickBooks is already in place for many posters, so the product has to integrate with it rather than replace it, and the evidence does not show how hard that integration is.
- No competitor pricing or revenue data was found, so willingness-to-pay levels are not known.
Potential pivot
Position as a mobile capture layer that sits on top of QuickBooks rather than a Procore replacement. Techs log parts used and photograph receipts per job, and supplier invoices are pulled automatically into a per-job P&L. This is backed by the Reddit posts on techs forgetting parts, the vendor-portal CSV workflow and the abandoned spreadsheets, and by Upwork demand for QuickBooks job costing setup.
PLG fit: do buyers already buy self-serve?
- Reddit: one two-man crew 'pays_for_tool' and another QuickBooks user pays for the tool, which shows these owners buy software directly.
- Reddit: one poster asks what apps others use for receipts, which is self-directed tool shopping.
- Against: a Procore reviewer says 'We spent $20,000 and got literally nothing', and others describe training sessions and integration projects, which points to a sales-led incumbent.
- Against: Upwork demand for QuickBooks setup specialists suggests some buyers need hands-on help to configure job costing.
Founder fit
Best for
- Founder with trade contracting or construction bookkeeping experience who knows QuickBooks job costing.
- Mobile-first product builder comfortable with OCR and receipt parsing.
- Founder able to sell through bookkeepers and accountants who serve trades.
Not for
- Founder seeking a large search-driven market, given the low search volumes.
- Founder unwilling to build and maintain QuickBooks and supplier integrations.
- Founder planning an enterprise sales motion against Procore.
If you started today
First version
- Mobile receipt photo capture with AI extraction of vendor, items and amount, assigned to a job.
- Tech-side quick log of parts used and hours per job, from the phone.
- Per-job P&L showing materials, labor and van stock against the invoiced amount.
- Sync of costs and invoices to QuickBooks Online.
- Import of supplier invoice CSVs or emailed invoices, matched by job number.
Stack
- React Native: mobile app for techs and owners.
- LLM vision/OCR API: receipt and invoice line-item extraction.
- QuickBooks Online API: push expenses, pull invoices.
- Postgres: jobs, costs, labor entries.
- Email ingestion (inbound parsing service): capture supplier invoices automatically.
First steps
- Contact the Reddit posters, especially the two-man plumbing crew and the vendor-portal poster, and walk through their current week of receipts.
- Interview Upwork construction bookkeepers about how they set up job costing in QuickBooks and where it breaks.
- Prototype receipt-to-job capture on real supplier receipts gathered from interviewees.
- Test whether techs will log parts on a phone at job completion by running a manual concierge version with one crew.
- Research Trayd's product scope and pricing to judge overlap.
- Ask interviewees what they pay now for QuickBooks, bookkeepers or tools, since competitor pricing is not known.
