The pitch

The owner of a small electrical contracting company is paying for ServiceTitan and, per a Reddit post, finds it poorly suited to the shop's workflow, costly, and badly supported, so they want to switch. Elsewhere on Reddit, a Canadian HVAC shop builds quotes in an Excel file that is not linked to DESCO ESC, QuickBooks Enterprise, MyGeotab or Stripe. Another poster says FieldEdge works for the office but its mobile app is hard for technicians to use. The idea brief cites owners paying $420/month while still missing local payment options. Low-star Jobber reviews add apps that struggle in areas with poor cell service, such as Truckee/Tahoe, and payout holds of 7 days. The opening is a field service tool that technicians in 1-30 tech shops will actually use, that works offline, and that has payments owners trust.

The gap

Heavyweight suites (ServiceTitan, FieldEdge, Davisware) and SMB tools (Jobber, Housecall Pro, FieldPulse, Crew Control) already exist, but posters and reviewers still report clunky tech mobile apps, weak offline use, payout holds and limits, and quoting that happens in disconnected spreadsheets.

Job to be done

When recurring and fill-in jobs must be assigned across a small trade crew without a shared calendar, the owner or office manager needs to schedule, dispatch and invoice work from one system, so they can stop coordinating by phone and Google Calendar.

What paying customers dislike about Jobber

Jobber is designed to help smaller and midsize operations. For us, We needed more substance at our size.
C Jobber, 3★, 2026-06-04
The routing feature needs improvement, and the app can struggle in areas with poor service, which makes it harder to stay efficient in the field.
C Jobber, 3★, 2026-04-30
No option to set default due dates per customer. Like you have in accounting systems like Xero. The booking function is very limited. It needs to be more granular so that I can assign areas and certain services to certain team members. The

Not very much that i didnt like about this program apart from the free trial could be longer as you dont have time to really try it.
C Jobber, 3★, 2025-10-14
Jobber can be pretty limited in terms of customizable features. Jobber doesn't promote the user to build the platform to fit their business needs, as opposed to running off of a more "Templated" system.

App Store: what users of current tools complain about

Requires super fast internet speed. I mean it’s just simple calendar, notes and couple extra functions like pressing finish button and sending invoices. Why you need super duper fast internet for that ?!? Why make this so heavy that sometimes it just can’t

You are better off grabbing a notepad, a pencil, and a manilla folder like it’s still 2003, than you are falling for jobbers marketing.
Jobber Field Service Software, 1★, 2026-09-30
The website software is great, but the mobile app is seriously lacking in functionality for techs. Recurring events don’t work well. They require a lot of manual work to copy and paste and are not flexible at all. You can’t just change a single appointment in

Distribution: how competitors and operators get customers

  • Google search: 'field service software' gets 22200 US/month at a $88.31 CPC, and the trade terms each get 590 US/month (search data).
  • Trade subreddits (HVAC, Plumbing, electricians, sweatystartup), where owners openly ask for alternatives to ServiceTitan and FieldEdge (Reddit).
  • Upwork implementers and consultants who already do Jobber setup and CallRail/GCLID tracking work could act as partners or referrers (Upwork titles).
  • YouTube views, marketplace reviews and X following data are not available in the evidence.

Should you build this?

Reasons to build

  • Of the 28 Reddit posts across HVAC, Plumbing, electricians, Construction and sweatystartup, 14 carried money signals and 16 described a recurring problem (Reddit data).
  • Posters name a dozen tools, including ServiceTitan, Housecall Pro, Jobber, FieldEdge, Service Fusion, Davisware, Crew Control and FieldPulse, so buyers are already paying and will switch (Reddit).
  • Tech-side mobile usability is a repeated complaint: FieldEdge's tech app is hard to use, ServiceTitan's mobile app could not search customers, and Davisware is disliked (Reddit posts).
  • Jobber reviews describe concrete gaps: poor offline use in weak-service areas, payout holds of 7 days, payment thresholds that won't be raised, quotes but no estimates, and weak reporting (low-star reviews).
  • Search for 'field service software' runs 22200 US/month, which shows active buyer demand (search data).

Reasons not to

  • The market is crowded with funded players; FieldPulse alone raised $50M in 2025-08 (investment data).
  • CPCs are high: $88.31 for 'field service software', $106.91 for 'hvac software' and $144.88 for 'plumbing software' (search data). Paid acquisition will be expensive.
  • Trade-specific search volume is small, at 590 US/month each for HVAC and plumbing software (search data).
  • Some Jobber reviewers say it is too simple for their size, and others say it is too limited, so 'simple' alone may cap how far a customer can grow with the product (low-star reviews).
  • Payments, phone numbers and accounting sync are table stakes and hard to build well, based on complaints about payouts and phone setup in Jobber reviews.
  • Competitor pricing and revenue data were not found, so the price ceiling is not known.

Potential pivot

Rather than a full suite, build an offline-first technician mobile app with fast quoting and estimating that syncs to QuickBooks and the shop's existing scheduler or calendar. Several pieces of evidence point here: the FieldEdge, ServiceTitan and Davisware tech-app complaints on Reddit, the Truckee/Tahoe offline review, the 'quotes, not estimates' review, and the Excel quoting workaround from the Canadian HVAC post.

PLG fit: do buyers already buy self-serve?

  • One Jobber reviewer said they were 'going back to house call pro', and another complained the free trial was too short, which suggests self-serve trials and switching happen (low-star reviews).
  • A new HVAC company picked Crew Control for its low cost, and a solo electrician is weighing Housecall Pro or Jobber, both decided without mention of a sales call (Reddit).
  • Counter-signal: one Service Fusion evaluator is relying on demos, and one reviewer asked for weeks of hands-on onboarding for Spanish-speaking clients, so some buyers need assisted setup (Reddit, reviews).
  • Counter-signal: Upwork jobs for Jobber setup and build-out show that some shops pay for implementation help (Upwork).

Founder fit

Best for

  • A founder who has worked in or run a small trades shop and can earn technician trust.
  • A strong mobile engineer with offline-sync experience.
  • A founder comfortable selling through community and word of mouth rather than paid search.

Not for

  • A founder who depends on paid search, given CPCs up to $144.88 (search data).
  • A founder who wants to avoid payments compliance and support work.
  • A founder looking for a fast, uncrowded market.

If you started today

First version

  • Offline-first technician mobile app with job details, checklists and photo capture.
  • Fast quotes and estimates built in the field, including from a template the shop already uses.
  • A simple dispatch board with recurring jobs and technician notifications.
  • Invoice sync to QuickBooks.
  • Card payments through a standard processor, with transparent payout timing.

Stack

  • React Native with a local SQLite store: offline-capable technician app
  • Postgres with a sync API: jobs, customers and quotes
  • Stripe Connect: payments
  • QuickBooks Online API: invoicing and accounting sync
  • Twilio: customer and technician texting

First steps

  • Interview the Reddit posters who mentioned ServiceTitan, FieldEdge and Davisware frustrations about what their technicians actually refuse to do in the app.
  • Shadow technicians at a few small HVAC, plumbing or electrical shops in areas with poor coverage.
  • Ask Upwork Jobber implementers which customizations they are asked for most.
  • Research competitor pricing directly, since it is not in the evidence.
  • Test willingness to pay for a tech-app-only product, with QuickBooks sync, with a small pilot group.

Sources and method

  • 28 posts from a 6,220-post sweep of 55 subreddits (Apify).
  • videos and 0 comments (Apify).
  • C 1–3★ reviews (Apify).
  • jobs and gigs (Apify).
  • posts by operators (Apify).

  • Tool mentions, pricing models and budgets are counted or parsed by fixed rules from the files above (scripts/report_page.py); the rules are stated under each chart.
